Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services has a proud history of serving the patients and doctors of Greenslopes Private Hospital and has grown to serve all the major private hospitals in Brisbane including Wesley Private Hospital, Mater Private Hospital, St Andrew’ War Memorial Hospital, Brisbane Private Hospital, North West Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside.
Until 1995 GPH was the Repatriation General Hospital Greenslopes, operated by the Repatriation Commission (Department of Veterans Affairs). The privatisation of the hospital in 1995 when Ramsay Healthcare assumed responsibility for the site was the spark that resulted in the formation of a small group of anaesthetists to service the needs of the hospital. And so began Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services.
Our founding anaesthetists were Dr KP Lew, Dr Chandi Richards, Dr Sue Shadforth, Dr William Soong and Dr Andrew Thang. Each had spent time working at the Repatriation Hospital. In late 2002, the group officially commenced as Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services with consulting rooms on-site. The commitment to Greenslopes Private Hospital (as it became known) has remained and the surgeons of GPH showed their support for the fledgling group of highly trained specialists. Within four years of commencement, the group had flourished to 18 associates providing specialist support for specialties including Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Obstetrics, Gastroscopy and Plastic surgery.
Our doctors service all the major private hospitals and day surgeries across the greater Brisbane area. Our practice has remained stable with around 24 associate anaesthetists – large enough to provide emergency cover to our surgeons and small enough to maintain a collegial work environment with shared values and support for our patients and surgeons. As a repatriation hospital, Greenslopes had a strong commitment to doctor training and Ramsay Healthcare has continued that commitment. The specialists at Greenslopes Anaesthesia Services have continued that commitment to training. Our specialists assist with training the doctors of the future with GPH’s links with University of Queensland Medical School.
